This paper of Everard published in 1984 has a lot of common ground with today methods. It shows the first use of the bark chipping technique for the production of pine oleoresin, using an ax with the same shape as the one used currently in Brazil and Argentina.
It also shows the results of chipping trees with and without sulphuric acid treatment, and a the diference between chipping every one, two or three weeks.
